Team SERVPRO Arrives Equipped With Tools to Calculate the Most Efficient Drying Process for Your Water Damaged Home

When restoring water problems inside a Tahoe residence, there are two main types of drying systems that get used. During the drying process, wet contents and materials can be dried by using either an open or closed drying method. The most efficient drying system to use when removing moisture depends on several environmental factors.

An open system uses air from the outside to speed up evaporation inside your home. Using an open drying system during water damage mitigation in Tahoe is only efficient if the climate outside is hot and dry. Before we begin the drying process, we measure the relative humidity and temperature inside and outside of the structure.

If our readings indicate that the air outside has at least 20 grains of water per pound less than the air inside, then open drying is considered. If the outside temperature is significantly higher than inside, open drying may be the most effective way to remove moisture promptly. If all of these conditions are met, our SERVPRO technicians open up all of the windows inside your home and set up air movers and fans to circulate the hot, dry air from the outdoors through your home.

However, open drying is not used as much as closed drying because it has a few setbacks. Having windows open creates a security risk and can waste energy. Open drying depends on ideal conditions outside; weather can change thus altering the environment.

When open drying is not deemed to be effective due to outside weather conditions, a closed drying system often gets implemented. During closed drying, the affected area gets sealed off from the outside air and the air of unaffected regions inside the house. If one room is affected the doors get closed and air movers and dehumidifiers get set up to create an environment that speeds up evaporation and removes water from the air. If the affected area is only a small portion of a large room, our crew can seal off the affected section with plastic creating a drying chamber.

Upon inspections, professional restoration technicians take measurements and moisture readings to decide if an open or closed system is going to be the best solution for structural drying.
